Quetta (Sports Report):
“Quetta has produced champions for Pakistan. Now it deserves the facilities to produce the champions of tomorrow.”
Former Pakistan No. 1, former World No. 14 and Asian Champion Shahid Zaman Khan has called on the government and relevant sports authorities to establish a world-class squash complex in Quetta to secure the future of squash in Balochistan.
Despite producing world-class players, Quetta still lacks modern squash facilities capable of supporting elite training and hosting international tournaments. During his recent visits, Khan witnessed talented young players struggling with inadequate courts and limited resources.
Having coached internationally and lived in Boston, USA, since 2010, Khan is determined to use his experience to support Pakistan’s next generation. While training his nephew, Hamza Khan, the 2023 World Junior Champion, in Quetta, he saw firsthand the urgent need for improved facilities.
Squash runs deep in Khan’s family. His father, Gul Bahadur Khan, has dedicated decades to coaching, while his maternal uncle, legendary champion Qamar Zaman, won the British Open. The family’s legacy continues through Hamza Khan and Noor Zaman, the 2025 World Under-23 Champion.
Khan has already supported young players by donating rackets, balls and equipment, but believes lasting progress requires institutional investment and long-term planning.
A modern squash complex could provide international-standard courts, professional coaching, junior development programmes and opportunities to host national and international tournaments—creating pathways for talented children, including those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Khan’s message is clear:
“Quetta has given Pakistan so much through squash. I grew up here, and I feel a responsibility to give back. Our young players have the talent and determination to become world champions, but they need proper facilities and opportunities.
I appeal to the government and relevant authorities to take urgent action. We cannot expect future champions to emerge without investing in their development. Quetta has earned the right to have a world-class squash complex. The time to act is now.”
Quetta has the talent, the champions and the legacy. Now it needs the facilities to build the future.
